In early June, the Scary Movie franchise made its grand return to theaters, but with a very divisive response. Even amid its harsh criticism, however, the new film is finding more success at home following its record-breaking run at the box office.
Scary Movie, also known as Scary Movie 6, officially arrived on PVOD and digital platforms on July 21. Just one day later, it's already the No. 4 most popular movie on the Apple TV Store in the United States (via FlixPatrol). The movie is also rising swiftly in many other regions around the world as well, making a splash on Apple TV, Google, and Amazon. Its digital rentals and purchases are all profit at this point for Scary Movie, which was a big hit financially when it was released in theaters on June 3.
Scary Movie Was Not Celebrated by Critics
When Scary Movie was released, it debuted at $55 million domestically, setting a record for the strongest opening weekend for the franchise. It went on to make over $230 million globally against a $30 million budget. This was despite critics shredding the new sequel in their reviews, giving Scary Movie an approval rating of just 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score was much higher in comparison at 64%, with many five-star reviews from filmgoers playing a big part in the bigger number.
While this is the sixth installment of the horror comedy movie series, it marked the return of the Wayans family, who hadn't been involved with the franchise since 2001's Scary Movie 2. Marlon, Shawn, Keenen Ivory, and Craig Wayans all worked on the screenplay alongside Rick Alvarez, while Michael Tiddes directed. Additionally, Marlon and Shawn reprised their roles as Shorty and Ray, joined by other franchise stars like Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, and Chris Elliott.
The Ghostface Killer Returns in Scary Movie
In the sequel, Cindy Campbell (Faris) and her old friends reunite when the same masked killer from the original Scary Movie resurfaces. This comes with many more spoof moments of the Scream movies, particularly the more recent installments. Many other recent horror franchises are also satirized in the new film, including Smile, M3GAN, Sinners, Terrifier, The Substance, Wednesday, and Weapons, as well more familiar horror classics like Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
As of now, there have not been any official announcements made to indicate that Scary Movie 7 will follow. However, the odds of that happening will certainly increase if the movie continues to perform well on streaming. Its box office success will also play a big part in the next installment potentially coming to be.
Scary Movie is now available to rent or purchase digitally on PVOD outlets.
