A crash along Interstate 81 in Dauphin County Tuesday morning killed two people, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Shortly after 10 a.m., troopers in Harrisburg were dispatched to a section of I-81 north in Lower Paxton Township, near the border with Susquehanna Township, for a two-vehicle crash with entrapment.
According to state police, a white Chevrolet van drifted across all lanes of I-81 north before hitting a disabled Amazon tractor-trailer that was on the shoulder.
Police noted the Amazon tractor-trailer was parked on the right shoulder of the highway with its emergency lights on. It’s unclear if anyone was in the tractor-trailer.
The driver and the only passenger in the van were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The police report said it was unclear if they had been wearing seat belts.
Troopers released the information about the crash after reviewing the van’s dashcam footage.
The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.
Police said the two people who died haven’t been identified as of Tuesday night.
The crash caused hourslong backups on I-81 northbound.
