(KRON) — Two suspects have been arrested in connection to a series of violent chain snatching robberies in San Jose earlier this month. According to the San Jose Police Department, the first of the incidents occurred on July 6 at around 8:46 p.m.
SJPD officers responded to a report of a violent robbery in a parking garage located in the 40 block of North San Pedro Street. A man was approached by two male suspects who police say forcibly snatched a gold chain from his neck and fled.
The victim chased after the suspects, at which point police said they brandished a firearm at him and verbally threatened him. The suspects then fled before police arrived.
The second incident occurred on July 12 at around 11:55 a.m. Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery and attempted murder in the 2400 block of Amaryl Drive. A man was in the area with his family when he was approached by a male suspect who snatched his gold chain and took off.
The victim tried to get his property back when the suspect brandished a firearm and shot at him, hitting him at least once. The suspect took off in a vehicle operated by another suspect. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
SJPD Robbery Unit detectives launched an investigation into both incidents. Utilizing safety cameras and automated license plate reader cameras, detectives identified one suspect vehicle used in both incidents.
Two suspects, 22-year-old Yahir Meza and a 17-year-old juvenile, were subsequently identified. The teenager, police said, was the primary shooter. Detectives obtained arrest warrants for both suspect and search warrants for their residences.
On July 16, detectives located and arrested both suspects in the city of San Jose. While executing the search warrant, detectives found evidence of the crime, including one of the victims’ gold chain necklace.
Meza was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for robbery. The juvenile suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall for robbery and attempted murder.
