Budding equestrian Alice Ferrari was vacationing with her mother in Italy when she died following a horrific accident. The 11-year-old was reportedly swimming at a lido in Sestri Levante on July 15, 2026, when her hair became stuck in a pool drain.
Staff attempted to save her, but paramedics could not revive her. Police opened an investigation trying to determine what went wrong and how they can help prevent this type of tragedy from occurring again.

According to The U.S. Sun, Alice dove into the water but did not resurface. Another child reportedly alerted staff, and Segesta Bath’s manager Daniele Muzio dove into the water and cut Alice’s hair to free her. When they returned to the surface, it was apparently evident that Alice’s condition was serious. Emergency responders arrived on the scene and administered treatment for 45 minutes before transporting her by air to a hospital in Genoa. Sadly, she died two days later.
Following her death, Alice’s family opted to donate her organs to help sustain life for others.

Local news source Il Messaggero reported Alice’s family, originally from Bergamo, regularly visited the Segesta bath and had walked away momentarily when they were getting ready to leave. Per the news outlet, the pool area did not have any signage requiring an adult to supervise children younger than 12.
In just three months, Alice is the fifth child to die in an Italian pool, according to The U.S. Sun. Per a statement obtained by the outlet, Italian Minister for Civil Protection Nello Musumeci claims these so-called “death trap” drains need to be addressed.
“Strict discipline is needed, but also greater caution is needed in never leaving children alone in the water,” Musumeci said. “The Meloni government’s bill, aimed at this goal, will be approved by the relevant committee within the month, and we will do everything possible to schedule it urgently.”
Alice’s equestrian club shared a loving message for the young girl.
FISE Lombardia posted about Alice’s sudden and shocking death on Facebook.
“Alice left us too soon, due to a tragic incident in the pool. She was a blonde, slender girl, with long hair and a smile still full of future,” FISE Lombardia shared in a post translated to English.
President Vittorio Orlandi shared condolences with Alice’s family.
“Today the Lombardia equestrian world is silent around her family, her trainers, her Pre-Academy companions and all the people who loved her. They will remain her love for horses, her dreams and the bright memory of a young amazone who will continue to gallop in the minds of those who knew her,” per the Facebook post.
“Alice, with her pure soul, gave the opportunity to other people to continue living. A hug to the family,” a comment reads. “May the earth be light to you, little angel.”
Alice’s death remains under investigation by Italian authorities.
