The mother of a 4-year-old boy who died in an overnight house fire in March has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, among other crimes.
Christopher Alfaro-Rodriguez died from smoke inhalation in the blaze at a house in Mundelein, Ill., on March 23, NBC5 Chicago and ABC7 Chicago reported.
The Mundelein Fire Department responded to the fire at around 12:20 a.m. local time, according to a news release. At the time, Alfaro-Rodriguez was unaccounted for, and crews found him deceased in the basement of the home.
His mom, 21-year-old Alianny Rodriguez, originally told police that she left her son at home while she went to get food and came back to see the house on fire, NBC5 Chicago reported.
However, investigators found that Rodriguez — who the fire department said was transported to a nearby hospital for a “non-fire-related issue” — hadn’t been at the house for about 20 hours, per the outlet.
She worked for a cleaning service, but police weren’t able to confirm if was working while she was gone.
A man who also lived there said he saw the boy when he left the house on March 22 and did not know that he was left alone, per NBC5 Chicago.
Authorities determined that the fire was caused by an electrical issue, the outlet reported.
Rodriguez was arrested on Thursday, July 16, and booked into the Lake County Jail. Along with involuntary manslaughter, she was charged with child endangerment causing death and child abandonment, according to NBC5 Chicago.
At the time of the fire, the Village of Mundelein shared a statement in which it said it was “deeply saddened” by Alfaro-Rodriguez’s death.

PEOPLE reached out to the Mundelein Police Department and Lake County State Attorney’s Office for comment but did not immediately hear back.
