Netflix's latest Western series is finding its footing. Little House on the Prairie, which premiered its eight-episode first season on Jul. 9, debuted at No. 3 on the streaming juggernaut's Global Top 10 Shows chart. However, it quickly skyrocketed to No. 1 in its second week, where the frontier drama now has a whopping 9.8 million views and 65 million hours viewed. This is more than a 50% jump from the previous week.
Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's nine-book series of the same name, which was published between 1932 and 1943, Netflix's Little House on the Prairie is, as the platform describes it, "part-hopeful family drama, part-epic survival tale, and part-origin story of the American West." The synopsis adds that the semi-autobiographical adaptation "offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier."
The Western stars Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls, Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, Kowen Cadorath as Caleb, and Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann. Rebecca Sonnenshine serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Trip Friendly is also an executive producer, who produced the 2015 documentaryLittle House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Little House on the Prairie received modest reviews from critics, sitting at 79% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and 67% on the Popcornmeter. It was already renewed for a second season in March, so fear not, fans—no need to worry about unresolved storylines.
Netflix isn't the first to adapt Wilder's perennially popular series. The British television show Jackanory aired five episodes in 1966 that were based on Little House on the Prairie. The mega-popular US TV adaptation aired on NBC from 1974 to 1983, starring Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls.
Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder aired as two parts of a made-for-TV movie on Jan. 2, 2000, and March 17, 2002. Then, in 2005, ABC released a Little House on the Prairie six-episode miniseries.
