New York Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried was previously scheduled to make one more rehab start before returning from injury. However, Fried is now expected to skip his final rehab start and start the second contest of the Yankees’ doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, the team announced, per MLB. Fried has not pitched since May 13 due to an elbow injury.
Injuries have been a concern overall for the Yankees. Aaron Judge remains out due to an injury at the moment. Nevertheless, New York has continued to play competitive baseball. The Yankees still look like a team that could make a deep postseason run.
Fried’s return will only help matters.

The 32-year-old turned in a 3.21 ERA across his 10 outings of the season before suffering the injury. The three-time All-Star finished fourth in American League Cy Young voting just last year.
It may take Fried a few outings to find his rhythm after missing over two months of action. Once he finds his groove, though, Fried could lead the way as New York attempts to win the American League East division.
New York is currently 56-44 overall. The ball club trails the Tampa Bay Rays by 1.5 games in the AL East as of this story’s writing. The goal, of course, is to win the division as opposed to settling for an AL Wild Card spot.
The first game of the Pirates and Yankees doubleheader is scheduled for 1:05 PM EST on Wednesday afternoon. Fried will then start the second ball game at 7:05 PM EST at Yankee Stadium.
