Woman finds random dog in home—watches cam back and realizes how he got in

The owner told Newsweek she has seen this dog before, but he had never ventured over her fence until recently.

A homeowner with three dogs received an unexpected wake-up call when an unfamiliar canine used her pet door to enter her house and jump into her bed.

The homeowner, Kenna, lives in a rural area where neighborhood dogs occasionally wander the surrounding properties. While she had previously seen one particular dog outside her fenced yard, the animal had never attempted to enter her property, she told Newsweek via TikTok.

That dynamic shifted when Kenna’s home security camera captured the wandering dog following her German shepherd mix, Buddy, through the doggy door. A video posted on July 8, shared on the TikTok account @xsnixsnax, shows the visitor exploring the living room before following Kenna’s other dog into the bedroom.

“I was actually asleep in my room when the random dog and my other German shepherd, Brandy, hopped onto my bed, and I woke up and yelled for him to get out,” she said.

The encounter caught Kenna by surprise, but she noted the dog seemed equally startled. The animal immediately jumped off the bed and fled once she sat up. While she does not know the dog’s exact home, she believes he belongs to a neighbor.

“I think he lives either at the end of the block or a street over,” she said. “We’re in a rural area, so it’s kind of a lot of space to cover.”

A Harmless Intrusion

The incident concluded without conflict or injury. Kenna noted that she did not mind the impromptu visit, provided her livestock remained unbothered.

“I’m assuming his owners have some too because he doesn’t bug mine at all,” she said, referencing her chickens and geese.

While her own dogs regularly use the pet door to navigate between the house and the fenced yard, Kenna joked that the situation was her “fault” for installing the doggy door in the first place.

The Risks and Rewards of Pet Doors

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), doggy doors offer distinct advantages for pet owners, including increased opportunities for canine exercise, mental stimulation, and convenience for owners unable to frequently let their pets outside.

However, the organization advises owners to weigh these benefits against potential drawbacks. The AKC notes that security, yard safety, and the entry of unwanted wildlife or neighborhood animals are critical factors to consider. To mitigate these risks, modern electronic pet doors utilize timers, manual locks, or sensors that sync with a specific pet’s collar to control access.

For Kenna, the doggy door remains a tool for her pets’ independence, even if it occasionally invites an unexpected guest.
