HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — A woman has been charged with 40 counts of animal cruelty and abandonment of animals after multiple dogs and turtles were removed from a home on Tuesday, according to a High Point Police Department news release.
There have been dozens of calls for service related to 64-year-old Chanida A. Oroain’s High Point home this year. At one point, she had more than 80 dogs living on her property.
On Tuesday afternoon, High Point officers with the department’s Animal Control Unit and Housing Authority Unit executed a search warrant at a home in the 2700 block of Central Avenue.
Officers found and removed nine dogs and three turtles. Officers also found skeletal remains of one dog.
Officers arrested and charged Oroain with more than 40 counts of animal cruelty and abandonment.
She is charged with:
- 28 counts of cruelty to animals
- 17 counts of abandonment of animals
- 4 counts of failure to have dog rabies vaccinated
Oroain was taken to the Guilford County Jail and given a $1,500 secured bond.
There have been more than 30 calls for service related to the home since the beginning of the year. Many of those calls involve dogs running loose.
In March, patrol officers charged Oroain with cruelty to animals after responding to her home, where 20 to 30 dogs were running in the road.
At one point, more than 80 dogs were living on the property. On several occasions, Oroain surrendered dogs to an animal control officer, police say.
Over the last few weeks, animal control officers have responded to the home to check on the animals. One of the visits was prompted by the high temperatures because power to the home had been shut off.
Earlier in July, an animal control officer was given permission to go inside the home, and she noted stuffy and dirty conditions.
She also noted a lack of water, malnourished animals and serious flea bites on several dogs. Those conditions and observations led to Tuesday’s search warrant and arrest.
Guilford County Animal Services staff is caring for the dogs and turtles that were removed from the home.
