The Atlanta Dream defeated the Chicago Sky in a tightly contested affair on Sunday, thanks to Jordin Canada's game-winner. Canada gave the Dream a 98-96 win after scoring on a layup at the buzzer following a handoff from Brionna Jones.
Canada finished with 10 points, nine assists and three steals in the victory. Allisha Gray led the team in scoring with 29 points and six rebounds.
Rookie Madina Okot had 14 points and four rebounds off the bench, while Rhyne Howard tallied 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and three blocks.
While it's a huge win for Atlanta, which has now won three straight games, a couple of incidents involving Reese put a damper on the victory.
Reese was injured early in the fourth quarter after a non-contact play. Video replay of the incident showed the Dream forward's left leg bending slightly backward after she planted her foot.
Prior to Reese's injury, with 4.8 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Howard was also assessed a technical foul after complaining to the officials on behalf of her teammate.
Reese appeared to be fouled during a battle for a rebound with Dream center Elizabeth Williams. The two got tangled and fell to the floor. Making matters worse, Reese was called for a foul on Williams.
Howard was not happy with the incident and complained to the referee, prompting the officials to hit her with a technical foul call.
It was Howard's second technical foul of the season, which means she's due to pay a $500 fine to the WNBA.
The league's rules state that a player's first three technical fouls each carry a $500 fine. The fourth through seventh techs are punishable with a $1,000 fine each, while anything beyond that carries a $1,500 fine. The eighth tech, and every other technical foul after that, also comes with a one-game suspension.
