Star Trek icon William Shatner, 95, has shared details about his fight with stage four melanoma, disclosing he received the diagnosis just months after his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch, 61, learned she had stage 4 breast cancer. The pair has now discussed their experiences confronting serious illnesses simultaneously in a joint interview, acknowledging how the ordeal changed their perspective on life after both eventually achieved cancer-free status.
Melanie received her stage four HER2-positive breast cancer diagnosis in 2022, following the discovery of a lump in her breast. The actress was devastated, particularly since it occurred merely five months after receiving a clear mammogram result. Approximately a year afterward, Hollywood star William, celebrated for his portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series, faced his own crushing diagnosis.

Medical professionals identified stage four melanoma that had metastasized to his lungs and brain.
In a conversation with People, William described the moment he pursued medical attention. He said, "I went to an oncologist... and they operated almost immediately with Stage 4 melanoma," reports the Express.
Cancer UK explains that Stage 4 melanoma represents an advanced stage of skin cancer that has migrated beyond its initial site to remote areas of the body, including the lungs, liver, brain, or distant skin regions. It is also referred to as metastatic melanoma.
Traditionally, it was associated with a prognosis of under a year, though medical breakthroughs have significantly enhanced survival outcomes for numerous patients. Melanie confessed she anticipated the worst upon discovering her father's diagnosis, though he maintained a strikingly positive attitude throughout his treatment.
"His response was like, 'I'm gonna be fine,'" she recalled.
The duo supported each other through chemotherapy, surgery and immunotherapy, with William also describing how their family grew closer during the challenging period.
"We're in a very together family," he said. "We're bonded by all kinds of difficulties that we overcame. And who knows what else we're going to overcome."
Melanie also recounted one of her most difficult experiences during chemotherapy, when she became certain she was nearing death.
Contemplating his transformed perspective, William added: "It's these miracles of life. If you let them go by, you lose your joy of living."
Melanie shared his sentiment, stating, "It changed my life, all for the better."
Now in remission, both William and Melanie are discussing their cancer survival journey in their new podcast, No Time But Now.
Melanie disclosed her father has discovered happiness in life's most basic pleasures, noting: "He gets more joy out of seeing a bird fly past his window and is more aware and has taught my sisters and I to be so aware of the sunrise and the blue sky."
