ARLINGTON – Manager Skip Schumaker sounded more optimistic about Corey Seager's recovery from back inflammation on Tuesday but could not make any call on whether he'd be available to the Rangers before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Seager ran the arc of the infield on Tuesday and started swinging off a machine throwing curveballs. That is part of his regular routine.
"It was a good day yesterday," Schumaker said. "He felt good again and hitting off the machine is good news. It's obviously trending the right way. We'll talk about live at-bats here soon, which is good news also. But everything is so day to day that it's tough for me to tell you that like this is the day he's going to play in a major league game. All I can say is the last couple of days have been way better than the last week or before the All-Star break."
Asked if he thought Seager could make an impact on the direction the Rangers go ahead of the trade deadline, though, Schumaker demurred.
"The lineup looks a little different when he's in it," Schumaker said. "There is no doubt. But I don't know if we'll get three or four games [before the deadline]. I don't know if its going to be more. I don't know if it's going to be less."
Due to back issues and a concussion, Seager has appeared in only eight games since May 13. Tuesday marked the 50th game he's missed this season. A year ago, Seager missed 60 games, the most he missed in his first four seasons with the Rangers.
