ARLINGTON – Both of the Rangers opening day catchers are now on the injured list.
An hour before first pitch Tuesday, the Rangers announced that Kyle Higashioka was headed to the IL with a right flexor tendon strain. The club selected the contract of Austin Wynns from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Higashioka.
Wynns, 35, has 226 career starts behind the plate for seven major league teams in a career that spans back to 2018. He appeared in 20 games for the Athletics and Atlanta this year, going 4 for 43 with no extra-base hits.
Higashioka, 35, missed two weeks early last season with an oblique strain, but also had to be managed in the second half last year, starting just 28 of the team's last 65 games. He joins Danny Jansen on the IL. Jansen has not played since June 2 due to an elbow issue and there is no timetable for his return.
It likely makes Elias Diaz the regular starter. Diaz has started 19 of the 35 games the Rangers have played since he joined the roster but had started 11 of 17 heading into Tuesday. Over his last 10 games, he has struggled at the plate, going just 4 for 27 (.148) with no walks or extra-base hits.
