Whoopi Goldberg thinks that the soldiers in The Odyssey maybe should’ve packed a few more brain cells into that Trojan Horse.
The EGOT-winning actress told director Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway during a Monday morning interview that she enjoyed the film immensely, and that it reminded her of the contemporary social climate.
“The thing about this for me, it gave me a lot of today, because it represents — and please don’t get annoyed with me, men — it does represent the stupidity of men,” the 70-year-old told the stars and the filmmaker.
She continued, explaining that in the adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, “men are told in this movie, ‘Don’t do this because this is going to happen.’ Every time, they go and do that, and they’re surprised that it’s going the other way!”
Goldberg also singled out the film’s handling of human conflict — particularly large-scale wars that made her think of other global conflicts going on in the world today.
“We have to be reminded why war doesn’t really work for anybody. No one wins in a war. There are no winners, and I got that,” she said.
She then turned to Hathaway, who plays Penelope in the film, and told her that the character signaled to her that “women forget that they are insanely strong and they are clever, because Penelope fools these men for 20 years.”
The Odyssey opened to record box office numbers after its Friday debut, raking in $264 million globally to become Nolan’s highest-earning movie in his filmography, surpassing the unadjusted $249 million worldwide haul The Dark Knight Rises posted in 2012. Adjusted for inflation, the latter’s total blows past the Odyssey‘s, with the Dark Knight film’s ticket sales soaring to $366.9 million in 2026 dollars.
The Odyssey has also courted strong Oscar buzz, with many predicting the film to garner multiple nominations at the 2027 ceremony, as many of Nolan’s films — including the Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer — have in the past.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Damon recalled working with Nolan on the epic scale of the film’s scenes — including a scene where soldiers enter the famous Trojan Horse.
“I was really excited because the first day in Essaouira...we saw the horse. Which was a moment to see this thing and all of the Trojans pulling,” Damon said. “But as we were shooting Troy, the horse was next up on the schedule, and so I said to Chris...’Hey, Tuesday, we’re doing the horse. How are you gonna shoot that?’ He goes, ‘No idea.’”

Nolan confirmed Damon’s recollection of events, explaining, “So we got in there with the camera, and...at some point, being in there for an hour or so, you’re like, ‘Maybe we should get out and take break.” We’re like, ‘No, no, no, no! Don’t!’ ... If I let them get out, they’re never getting back in. So we just need to get every shot. We stayed in there for hours. We got it done.”
