New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is doing things differently than the former mayors. The 34-year-old is known for his revolutionary ideas for NYC, and the latest in the list of those ideas is a new pilot program designed to give parents a few hours off without the cost of hiring a babysitter.
According to ABC7NY, Mamdani has launched a “Parents’ Night Out” program, sponsored by the city, to give parents in NYC some time off by providing babysitting solutions. The pilot program has space for up to 500 kids between the ages of 6 and 13 and will take place on August 14, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis from July 13 to July 20.
While parents spend a few hours running errands, enjoying dinner or simply taking a break, children will participate in supervised games, sports, arts and crafts, fitness activities, media education programs and nature exploration led by trained NYC Parks staff. Dinner will also be provided for participants. The experience is designed to showcase all the engaging recreational programs NYC Parks offers year-round.
Explaining the goal behind the initiative, Mamdani said, “Every parent knows that a few hours to yourself can feel like a luxury. It shouldn’t be.” He added, “That’s why we’re launching New York City’s first-ever Parents’ Night Out, so that parents can get a little time on their own to catch a movie, run errands or go on a date without worrying about who will take care of the kids — or how much it will cost. Making New York City more affordable isn’t just about lowering costs; it’s about giving people back their time.”
NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura echoed the sentiment, saying, “Parents and caregivers spend so much of their time taking care of everyone else, and they deserve an opportunity to recharge.”
The new program got widespread attention on social media and generated mixed reviews. While some people thought it could be a good idea, others debated several aspects of the program, including funding and the security of leaving their kids with strangers. One user took to X and said, “And who exactly is paying for this?” while another wrote, “Did you ask people if they mind that their tax dollars are used to support this?”
A third questioned people who will be willing to take part in this program and said, “If you’re willing to entrust your child to a government-provided babysitter, you are a shitty parent.” Another concerned user chimed in, “Well, this can be a good and bad idea at the same time. Hopefully there’s background checks to reassure these people are not creeps.” Yet another argued that no responsible parent will leave their kid and said, “Who is stupid or careless enough to leave their kids with some rando?”
Another section of society also believed that the program would lead to more child abuse cases. One said, “This sounds like a great way to end up with a molested child.” A second questioned, “Will he cover up all the cases of child sexual abuse that this will lead to?”
The program will be offered at one recreation center in each borough, including Brooklyn’s Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center, Manhattan’s Highbridge Recreation Center, Queens’ Al Oerter Recreation Center, the Bronx’s Kwame Ture Recreation Center and Staten Island’s Greenbelt Recreation Center.
