One of the most loved and recognized modern royals is Kate Middleton. She has been praised and appreciated for her calm demeanor and polished approach to royal engagements. However, according to a source, she wasn’t always like this and had to take a little help from a senior Royal.
According to Radar Online, Queen Elizabeth II loved how Kate spoke to people at royal engagements, but she used to talk a lot, which was problematic. The late queen believed every well-wisher deserved attention, but also understood the importance of maintaining the pace of public engagements, where hundreds of people could be waiting to meet members of the royal family.
One palace source told the publication, “Queen Elizabeth always believed every member of the public deserved attention, but she also knew hundreds of people could be waiting. Kate’s natural warmth sometimes meant conversations lasted much longer than scheduled, so she was encouraged to keep moving.”
The insider added, “It wasn’t criticism – it was practical advice to essentially ‘shut up a bit more’ from someone who had perfected the role. Basically, Kate gabbed too much when she first joined the royals.”
Another palace insider reportedly stressed that the advice was never intended to make Kate less approachable. The source said, “There was never any suggestion that Kate should become less friendly. The message was simply that a royal walkabout is carefully timed. If you spend too long with one person, dozens of others miss out. It became one of the first lessons she learned after joining the family.”
Although the information came from an unverified source, Kate has herself also admitted that her lengthy conversations are something he has been told to work on and is still working on. In an interview during Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, the Princess of Wales reflected on one of her earliest solo engagements with the late monarch. She admitted she was nervous about the occasion.
She recalled, “The most memorable engagement for me, I suppose, was an away day to Leicester, and I went without William, so I was rather apprehensive about that.” Kate also acknowledged that managing walkabouts is a skill that takes time to develop. “I think there is a real art to walkabouts. Everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting, so I think I’ve still got to learn a little bit more and pick up a few more tips, I suppose.”
Another palace source confirmed that the queen appreciated that Kate was friendly and was “impressed” by her willingness to listen and learn. The insider claimed, “The Queen appreciated that Kate genuinely enjoyed meeting people. What impressed her most was Kate’s willingness to listen, learn, and quietly refine her approach without losing the warmth that made those conversations so memorable – and you can see the effect of the queen’s advice now in the way Kate treats her walkabouts.”
