The tragic Costa Concordia shipwreck has garnered new attention thanks to the Netflix documentary, Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea.
The documentary, which hit the streamer July 10, includes first-person interviews from surviving passengers, never-before-seen videos and black box information detailing the tragedy.
On Jan. 13, 2012, the Italian luxury cruise ship had just started its anticipated seven-day cruise across the Mediterranean Sea when the captain decided to reroute and perform a sail-by-salute near Giglio Island. However, the boat didn’t slow down and instead ran into an underground rock formation.
The ship immediately started to take on water through a 174-foot tear in the port side. As a result of the chaos, miscommunication and delayed orders, 32 people died and over 150 people were injured. A total of six people, including Captain Francesco Schettino, went to prison after the tragedy.
For people interested in learning more about what happened, there are a handful of previous documentaries and true crime episodes that have been released over the years.

“Why Ships Sink” and “Sunken Ship Rescue” — Nova
Nova, the PBS science documentary series, released two episodes about the Concordia shipwreck.
The first episode, titled “Why Ships Sink,” was released in April 2012 and explores the massive cruise industry and the safety standards within it.
“Twenty million passengers embark on cruises each year, vacationing in deluxe ‘floating cities’ that offer everything from swimming pools to shopping malls to ice skating rinks,” the description reads. “And the ships just keep getting bigger: The average cruise ship has doubled in size in just the last ten years. Some engineers fear that these towering behemoths are dangerously unstable.”
Three years later, Nova revisited the topic of the Costa Concordia but specifically focused on the ship’s recovery effort in an episode titled “Sunken Ship Rescue.”
“Follow the epic operation to secure, raise, and salvage the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which ran aground and tragically capsized off the coast of Italy on January 13, 2012, killing 32 people,” per the description. “The massive wreck—with a 160-foot-long hole in its hull—stretches the length of three football fields, weighs 45,000 tons, and was half submerged on the site of a protected reef. Moving it from its precarious perch on the edge of an underwater cliff turned into a technical and logistical challenge of staggering proportions.”

The Costa Concordia: Why She Sank
A decade after the tragedy occurred, ITN Productions released a two-episode docuseries titled The Costa Concordia: Why She Sank.
“Ten years on from one of the worst maritime disasters in living memory, this two-part series tells the definitive story of the sinking of the Costa Concordia,” the description reads. “Combining exclusive first-person testimony from survivors, rescuers and previously unseen footage, graphic reconstruction and expert insight, these programmes will tell the astonishing story of what happened on the night in forensic detail.”

“Escape: The Wreck of the Costa Concordia” — Dateline
The NBC longtime true crime series Dateline covered the Costa Concordia shipwreck in an episode titled “Escape: The Wreck of the Costa Concordia,” that originally aired as part of season 23 on March 1, 2015.
“Six survivors of the 2012 Costa Concordia shipwreck share their stories,” the description states.
The Dateline episode is available to stream on Peacock and Apple TV.
