The sudden emergence of the button-down shirt as more than just a humble wardrobe staple is not your imagination. It’s an always-reliable piece, of course — workwear in its most classic form — but recently, celebrities have made the case for wearing the style off-duty, including Zendaya, Drew Barrymore, and Kate Hudson, among many others.
So, maybe it’s no surprise that I find myself reaching for my Marine Layer Jane Double Cloth Shirt pretty often. While it’s a button-down in the traditional sense, it’s the antithesis of the styles that have been starched to crisp perfection. The brand is known for its unconventionally soft garments, and this shirt fits right into the mix with its 100 percent cotton construction.
Marine Layer Jane Double Cloth Shirt
That’s what I love most about it, actually. The double-layered fabric breathes exceptionally well in the summer heat, but despite being thicker than an ordinary shirt, it doesn’t feel overly warm or heavy. At the same time, it’s considerably more substantial than a standard button-down, and the two layers prevent it from feeling paper-thin or flimsy against the skin.
It offers the best of both worlds: quintessential breeziness coupled with a hint of smart tailoring, bridging the gap between styles to help me feel pulled together even when I’m going super casual for the day. The Marine Layer shirt is one of my closet MVPs, pairing just as suitably with jeans as with linen pants. I’ve even worn it with skirts and thrown it on unbuttoned over tank tops and dresses.
The shirt comes in sizes XS to XL, and the fit is very forgiving. It’s just loose enough to look intentional instead of sloppy — and that makes it a solid beach cover-up option, too. Layered over a swimsuit by the water or worn over a bikini top and shorts while strolling the boardwalk, it works overtime as a real wardrobe workhorse.
It’s available in both white and navy, both bearing the distinctive crinkled finish that lends the shirt its inherently laid-back feel. The easy and relaxed fit exudes a summery vibe, but the top is really just as suitable to wear during tricky seasonal transitions and layer during cooler months to stay comfortable year-round.
That versatility has made it one of my favorites for summer travel, too. It’s especially comfortable on planes, which are notoriously chilly, and looks a little more dressed up than conventional casual apparel. Because of the built-in “wrinkles,” I’ve unpacked it from my suitcase and thrown it right on without even thinking about ironing.
Now’s a great time to snap up the Marine Layer Jane Double Cloth Shirt at REI, with the white version marked down from its usual $108 to $81, and the navy on sale for $88. Ahead, shop more button-down styles from the retailer.
