Less than two weeks after paying E. Jean Carroll $5.6 million tied to a civil sexual abuse and defamation case, President Donald Trump is asking for the money back.
Trump’s legal team is seeking an emergency injunction that would force Carroll to return the amount she was paid following a judge’s July 8 ruling that ordered the payment process to begin, according to The Independent.
The money, sent to Carroll from an escrow account overseen by the court, came three years after a federal jury found Trump, 80, liable in the case. In ordering Trump to pay the $5.6 million, Judge Lewis Kaplan said that the president had spent years delaying the case despite repeated losses in court.
“Defendant has been stalling this case for years,” Judge Kaplan wrote in his ruling. “A jury unanimously concluded that he sexually abused and defamed plaintiff and awarded her damages accordingly. The judgment on that verdict has been upheld on appeal.”
Kaplan also noted that the U.S. Supreme Court — including three justices appointed by Trump — declined to review the case “without dissent,” adding that “it is time” for the president to “pay the judgment.”
In documents filed with the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit on Monday, July 21, Carroll’s lawyers opposed Trump’s request for the injunction, writing that the request is “procedurally improper, substantively meritless, and yet another example of Defendant’s pattern of ‘slow-roll[ing] his defenses, asserting or inventing a new one each time his prior effort to delay the case fails.’”
“But rather than accept the reality that he had lost, [Trump] has engaged in a series of maneuvers trying desperately to forestall payment,” the lawyers for Carroll wrote.
The emergency injunction request comes after the payments began to Carroll, who was awarded the judgment after a New York civil jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming her over an encounter at a Manhattan department store in the 1990s.
In the suit, Carroll accused Trump of forcing her against the wall of a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue in New York City, pinning her in place with his shoulder, and raping her.
Trump has denied Carroll’s allegations since she first made them public in her 2019 memoir. He spent years challenging the landmark 2023 verdict, ultimately asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his appeal. Earlier this year, the justices declined to take up the case.
Following the justices’ decision, Trump took to social media, calling the case brought against him “fake.”
“Surprisingly, the Supreme Court declined to ‘review’ a Fake Case brought against me by a woman I never met,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on June 29. “I will continue the fight against this Weaponization and Lawfare Case against me, including the ridiculous claim of Defamation, with all of my power and strength.”

“This Injustice cannot be allowed to stand!” the president added.
Aaron Harison, a spokesperson for Trump’s legal team, told The New York Times that “the American people stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the witch hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll hoaxes.”
