Where to get your best cup: South Africa’s top coffee shops

From Cape Town's steampunk roasteries to Joburg's neighbourhood favourites, South Africa's coffee scene has never been stronger. The post Where to get your best cup: South Africa’s top coffee shops appeared first on SA People.

South African coffee culture has shifted dramatically over the past few years. What used to be a quick takeaway before work has become a full sensory experience, complete with single-origin beans, latte art, and interiors as considered as the brew itself. Coffee is genuinely huge in Kenya, one of the countries I called home, and my go-to spot there was always Dormans Coffee.

Cape Town remains the undisputed capital of specialty coffee in South Africa. Espressolab in De Waterkant, in business since 2009, recently landed a 40th-place ranking on The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list for 2026, the only South African entry to make the cut. It’s proof that local roasters are competing on a genuinely international stage.

Truth Coffee Roasting deserves its own mention entirely. Known for its striking steampunk interior and immersive café experience, it’s one of the most internationally recognised coffee shops in the world, and has done more than most to put South African coffee culture on the map.

Cape Town’s coffee crown

Deluxe Coffeeworks started as a tiny cafe on Church Street and has since expanded across Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and even Namibia. Plato has also become one of the trendiest spots in the city for a flat white. Both capture that easy, design-forward energy Cape Town does so well.

Johannesburg steps up

Joburg’s coffee culture has grown into something far more intentional and almost ritualistic in 2026, a shift from the grab-and-go mentality of years past. Neighbourhood cafés in Sandton, Melville, and Rosebank are now genuine destinations, not just pit stops.

Beyond the big cities

Along the KZN South Coast, The Coffee Cave has built its reputation on freshly roasted coffee and easy online ordering, while Gatvol Coffee brings bold branding and cultural identity to the table. Wherever you find yourself, South Africa’s coffee map keeps expanding, and it holds its own against what I grew to love in Kenya.
