When is Labor Day 2026?
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, this year. The holiday, which marks the unofficial end of summer, is always observed on the first Monday in September, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
The first Labor Day celebration was held Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. The event recognized the American labor movement and the contributions workers made to the country's development and achievements, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Why was Labor Day started?
Labor Day grew out of the labor movement in the late 19th century, when many workers were pushing for better wages, shorter workdays and safer working conditions.

The first celebration included a parade organized by the Central Labor Union in New York City, according to the Department of Labor. The organization held another Labor Day celebration the following year, on Sept. 5, 1883.
Several states later adopted Labor Day before it became a federal holiday. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making the first Monday in September a national holiday.
The law was approved as the Pullman Strike, a major railroad labor dispute, was unfolding. Thirty-one states had already recognized Labor Day before Congress acted, according to an archived White House proclamation.\
What does North Texas do for Labor Day?
Parades have been part of Labor Day celebrations since the holiday began. The first proposals for the holiday called for a street parade to demonstrate the strength and unity of labor organizations, according to the Department of Labor.
North Texans can also find festivals, concerts, barbecues and other community events throughout the long weekend. And, of course, people across Dallas-Fort Worth will celebrate the unofficial end of summer with cookouts, pool parties and gatherings with family and friends.
