The first three seasons of American Ninja Warrior were filmed in Japan, featuring American competitors vying for the opportunity to compete in the country's prestigious Sasuke reality series, which was the precursor to the modern ninja obstacle course race viewers enjoy today.
American Ninja Warrior began airing on NBC with Season 4, and still airs on the network today. The first wholly U.S.-based episode of American Ninja Warrior aired on May 20, 2012. The show has been on NBC for over 14 years.

Matt Iseman describes competing on ANW as "controlled chaos"
Matt Iseman has been a staple of the ANW broadcast booth since the show's second season, so he knows a thing or two about watching arguably the best athletes on the planet get taken down by the iconic obstacle course.
In a 2012 interview with The Futon Critic, Iseman spoke about what it's like watching a typical race, calling it "controlled chaos."
"We've seen some phenomenal athletes, some of the best competitors go out on the first obstacle, one they've done a thousand times in practice and you realize that you can't have a mental lapse in this course; it's so unforgiving. So it's kind of a controlled chaos," he explained.
"You can't be obsessed about it in your head but you still need to be aware of every step, that something can go wrong," Iseman continued. "So, there really is a strong cerebral component to it ... you get one shot. So you have to rise, the lights are at their brightest, the stakes are at their highest. You have to be able to handle that pressure. That's without the training, because they don't know what they're getting into and there's no training for it."
