In one of the more high-profile recruiting battles in recent memory, the Tennessee Volunteers have come out on top — David Gabriel-Georges is a Vol. The 5-star running back picked Tennessee over Ohio State and Ole Miss this evening during a commitment ceremony in Chattanooga at Baylor School, where he has been a standout talent for the past two seasons.
Gabriel-Georges will put the cherry on top of his dominant high school career this fall before joining Tennessee and instantly becoming one of the Vols’ most important players going into 2027.
It’s another massive recruiting win for Josh Heupel and company over Ohio State, following the addition of 5-star offensive tackle David Sanders two cycles ago. Both cases turned out to be some of the most followed recruiting battles in recent memory, turning into very public and NIL-centered negotiations. Following Sanders, Tennessee’s string of adding elite talent marches on with quarterback Faizon Brandon and TK Keys ready to roll this year, and ‘DGG’ coming in to follow.
Where David Gabriel-Georges ranks all-time as a Tennessee commit
Gabriel-Georges is Josh Heupel’s eighth 5-star commitment since he’s been at Tennessee. According to 247Sports, DGG is the tenth best prospect to commit to Tennessee all time, with a .9946 rating. He’s the fourth highest rated running back, trailing the likes of Bryce Brown, Gerald Riggs Jr. and Jabari Davis.
Heupel and his staff have now landed three (Nico Iamaleava, David Sanders, DGG) of the top ten prospects all-time during his time in Knoxville.
What does the Tennessee backfield look like in 2027?
That question will be left up to DeSean Bishop, who is in for another big year in 2026. The former walk-on ran for 1,076 yards in 2025, scoring 16 times in Tennessee’s potent rushing attack. Bishop perhaps will have even more chances this season, which begs the question — might he head for the NFL after another productive year? The 5-10, 215 pound redshirt junior will have another season of eligibility left if he wants it. Bishop could also start his professional career after two seasons with a full workload at the college level.
That would obviously leave Gabriel-Georges in a potential workhorse role as a true freshman. Javin Gordon (sophomore), Daune Morris (sophomore) and Justin Baker (sophomore) will all also be in the picture, assuming none of them hit the transfer portal.
While a Bishop-DGG duo would certainly be exciting, DGG would figure to make a seamless transition into a feature-back role fairly quickly. As we’ve all seen, Heupel and his staff have been able to mold just about any back into a big-time producer in this offense. The thought of them doing it with an elite talent is pretty exciting to say the least.
Faizon-DGG-Keys and an offensive line led by David Sanders? 2026 remains a bit of a wildcard, but 2027 will be filled with 5-star offensive talent.
