Ryan Clark’s departure from ESPN on Monday has seen numerous big players in the sports media industry share their thoughts on the development.
It is believed ESPN have made a number of cost-cutting firings ahead of the new 2026 NFL season getting underway in just a matter of weeks.
Clark has been a regular on ESPN having joined the network all the way back in 2015 following a successful career as a safety in the NFL.
However, the nature of Clark’s departure is what has really frustrated some of his colleagues as he was informed of the decision midway through an NFL Live show on ESPN.
It has been suggested that Clark’s confrontational manner contributed to his ESPN firing following a heated exchange with Peter Schrager last year.
However, established talking head Stephen A. Smith has now weighed in on the matter to share his frustrations with the ESPN chiefs.

Clark is just one of 10 members of the ESPN broadcasting team that has been laid off since the start of the week as the cost-cutting exercise takes effect.
Smith has established himself as one of the top voices on ESPN, which is why his latest comments on Clark’s firing will hold some value.
“A person I considered to be the best NFL analyst in America, is no longer a part of ESPN. I can’t even tell y’all how much that hurt,” said Smith on his YouTube channel.
“I’m gonna miss him. I’m not happy with this decision. The bosses know I’m not happy. I made this very clear.”
The departures from ESPN are expected to continue over the coming days as their cutbacks provide some shocking layoffs.
It has even been suggested that NFL Insider Tom Pelissero is one of the names who could follow Clark out of the doors at ESPN.
There are some seriously established figures in the American sports broadcasting business who are heading into the summer as free agents.
Someone like Pelissero would unlikely be out of work for too long, but it does go to show the extent to which ESPN are going to in order to cut back on their costs.
