NORTH HALEDON — Heavy rain has been blamed for opening up a sinkhole in a section of a residential street, which is now closed to through traffic.
The Police Department said in a Facebook post that Saw Mill Road, between Indian Trail and Stockton Road, will be off-limits until the borough engineer can assess the damage.
Residents in that neighborhood were directed to enter their properties from the southbound side of Saw Mill Road. The pavement and sidewalk caved in around a stormwater drain on the northbound side of the street.

Downpours on July 21 caused flash flooding and isolated power outages throughout the area. Tornadoes were confirmed in Parsippany-Troy Hills and Stanhope, a small borough in Sussex County.
The National Weather Service said North Haledon received 2.92 inches of rain. The highest total in the tristate region was reported in Stamford, Connecticut, where 4.92 inches of rain fell during the storm.
