A whale watching trip in Monterey Bay turned into an unforgettable wildlife encounter on July 20 when passengers witnessed a pod of orcas hunting dolphins just feet from their boat.
Video captured by Sanctuary Cruises crew member Luke Kilpatrick shows the orcas racing through the water, repeatedly launching themselves into the air as they chased the dolphins. At times, the predators can even be seen flipping their prey into the air during the dramatic hunt.
"They're going full throttle," one person can be heard saying in the video as the orcas surge through the water.
Sanctuary Cruises shared the footage on social media, saying the crew was "still processing" what they had witnessed.
"Some of the most amazing orca behaviors we have ever captured," the company wrote, describing the encounter as an extraordinary feeding frenzy.
While orcas, also known as killer whales, are apex predators that hunt a variety of marine animals, witnessing such an intense pursuit from a whale watching boat is a rare sight.
The remarkable encounter offered passengers a front-row seat to one of nature's most powerful displays of predation in Monterey Bay.
