Deep beneath the surface of Western Australia’s remote and marine life-rich Ningaloo coast, a legendary marine leviathan is lurking in the darkness.
During deep-sea research expeditions led by Curtin University in collaboration with the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the Western Australian Museum, scientists detected evidence of the ocean’s most mysterious creature: the giant squid (Architeuthis dux).
These deep-ocean titans are truly staggering in scale. Growing longer than a standard school bus—stretching between 30 and 40 feet—the giant squid can weigh up to 600 pounds. To navigate the pitch-black depths, it possesses the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, measuring up to 12 inches across, or roughly the size of a dinner plate.
Yet, despite deploying cameras and remotely operated vehicles down into the Cape Range and Cloates submarine canyons at depths exceeding 14,000 feet, researchers didn't actually catch a physical glimpse of the beast.
Instead, they detected its presence through environmental DNA (eDNA)—microscopic genetic material shed into seawater via skin, mucus, or tissue. Traces of giant squid DNA appeared in six separate water samples, marking the first time the species has been recorded in the region in over 25 years.
“Finding evidence of a giant squid really captures people's imagination, but it's just one part of a much bigger picture,” said lead author Dr. Georgia Nester of Curtin University. She noted that eDNA allows scientists to confirm “fragile, rare, and fast-moving species that traditional cameras and nets may miss.”

Dr. Lisa Kirkendale, Head of Aquatic Zoology at the Western Australian Museum, highlighted the breakthrough nature of the finding, stating:
“This is the first record of a giant squid detected off Western Australia's coast using eDNA protocols and the northernmost record of A. dux in the eastern Indian Ocean.”
While this elusive phantom of the deep managed to slip past the camera lenses once again, the genetic footprint proves it is actively patrolling Australia's deep ocean canyons.
As deep-sea exploration technology advances, marine biologists remain hopeful that it is only a matter of time before humans finally capture direct footage of Western Australia's giant squid in its natural realm.
