Chris Jericho is bringing back one of the darkest characters of his career. AEW has officially confirmed the return of The Painmaker ahead of this Sunday’s AEW Redemption PPV.
AEW released a bloody new video featuring Jericho’s violent alter ego. It shows that his feud with Tommaso Ciampa has gone beyond a normal wrestling rivalry. Their rematch has now been made a No Holds Barred match, setting up what could be one of the most brutal fights at Redemption on July 26 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
Chris Jericho brings back The Painmaker after Ciampa’s brutal attack
Jericho and Ciampa’s rivalry has grown in intensity over the past few weeks.
At AEW Dynamite: Beach Break, Ciampa beat Jericho in a bloody and physical match. But he wasn’t done after the win. Ciampa attacked Jericho with a steel chair several times and even threatened him with a power drill.
Instead of asking for revenge in a normal way, Jericho answered by bringing back The Painmaker.
Last week, Jericho spoke from a dark room and admitted that he actually enjoyed being covered in blood. He then slowly revealed his Painmaker face paint and black fedora.
After Jericho’s video aired, Ciampa demanded that their rematch be made a No Holds Barred match. That means there will be no rules, opening the door for weapons, wild brawls around the arena, and the kind of violence both men crave for.
Now, AEW is promoting the match between The Painmaker and The Psycho Killer for this Sunday’s Redemption.
The promo video features several brutal and hard-hitting moments from both wrestlers, showing just how personal their rivalry has become. It also highlights Ciampa’s attacks on Jericho and Jericho’s decision to bring back his Painmaker persona.
The return of The Painmaker is also a big moment for longtime Jericho fans. He has only used this character in his most personal and violent feuds.
Jericho first introduced The Painmaker during his 2019 New Japan Pro-Wrestling run as a darker version of himself. The character was created as a response to Kazuchika Okada’s famous “Rainmaker” nickname.
