No one is officially out of the LeBron James sweepstakes until he makes a decision. But it doesn’t sound as if the Warriors like their chances. “The Warriors are pessimistic that event is going to take place,” ESPN senior writer Anthony Slater said on NBA Today.

No one is officially out of the LeBron James sweepstakes until he makes a decision. But it doesn’t sound as if the Warriors like their chances.

“The Warriors are pessimistic that event is going to take place,” ESPN senior writer Anthony Slater said on NBA Today. “Really since the beginning they just thought they’re not at the top of the list. I talked to somebody last night that said they’ve been given no sign or hint that it’s gonna happen.”

For what it’s worth, Slater spent years covering the Warriors before joining ESPN and remains one of the league’s most plugged-in voices when it comes to Golden State.

As for James, there still isn’t much clarity. Three weeks after informing the Lakers he wouldn’t return, he has yet to reveal where he’ll play next in what has become one of the most unpredictable free agencies in NBA history.

Slater added that Golden State believes it would have received some indication by now if the Warriors were seriously in the running.

“While we know LeBron has been difficult to contact directly in this process, Steph Curry has clearly contacted him directly, and Draymond Green has been vacationing with him,” Slater said. “So I would think that the Warriors would know if it’s leaning one way or the other.

“And all of my indications from the Warriors side are they believe it is not leaning towards them. They’re keeping a roster spot open and would love to have him. But they’re not planning for it.”

League sources continue to indicate the Cavaliers, Heat and 76ers remain among the teams firmly in the mix, though no one appears willing to predict how this saga will end.
