WRAL News is learning more about the investigation into a 2004 cold case out of Garner.
According to court documents obtained by WRAL News on Tuesday, Megan Potter, a police officer with the Four Oaks Police Department, is identified as a suspect in the death of Josh Davis.
Davis, 16, was found dead on Hall Boulevard on Jan. 6, 2004. Police initially determined his death was caused by a hit-and-run, but later said it was under investigation as a homicide.
While Potter is on administrative leave, she has not been formally charged in the case and denied any involvement in his death during the initial investigation.
The warrants said police officers received tips in 2008 and 2010 claiming that Potter was involved in Davis' death while in a stolen car. The Garner Police Department interviewed the tipsters in 2025. Then, Garner police and the SBI interviewed Potter in September, while she was working with the Four Oaks Police Department.
Police in the warrants said they made several attempts to conduct follow-up interviews with Potter, but she refused to talk.
The warrant says the SBI seized Potter's phone in March after learning she used a law enforcement database to look up one of the tipsters.
Garner police sought the warrant to get more information from her phone, specifically between when she was interviewed in September and when authorities seized her phone.
Potter was demoted to patrol officer by the Four Oaks Police Department in June and eventually put on unpaid administrative leave.
