Using a restroom that doesn’t match assigned sex could become a crime in Bossier

SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS)—Bossier Parish is considering a new ordinance that would create criminal penalties for using a restroom that doesn’t match your sex assigned at birth in parish-owned buildings.

That includes courthouses, libraries, public works facilities, and recreation centers.

Penalties can escalate to a $250 fine for the first; up to $500 and 30 days in jail for the second; and a third offense could bring a $500 fine plus six months behind bars.

“I mean, then it’s up to each individual person to follow that ordinance, and like with any other ordinance that we enforce, it doesn’t matter which one it is, we’re gonna enforce it the way we do everything. We’ll just investigate each individual’s situation, you know, accordingly and go from there. I mean, we’re not going to be. Treating this ordinance any different than any other one that’s already in play,” said Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office PIO, Sgt. Matthew Bertrand,

There are exceptions for parents helping children, medical emergencies, and maintenance staff on the job.
