The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is being accused of considering race in its admissions process.

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine is being accused of considering race in its admissions process.

According to a news release, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said the medical school violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin for programs or activities that receive federal aid, the U.S. Department of Justice reports.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division also said the college went against the Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which does not permit race-conscious admissions practices at colleges and universities, as AFROTECH previously told you.

These alleged violations stem from the department’s finding that “admissions staff used purportedly ‘race-neutral’ subjective criteria to deliberately increase admission of so-called ‘underrepresented minorities in medicine,’ which includes Black and Hispanic applicants,” the DOJ said in a statement, according to Reuters. The department’s news release alleges that the university asked applicants how they “overcame” disadvantages to determine who was considered underrepresented minorities, leading to more white and Asian applicants being denied admission compared to Black and Hispanic applicants.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division stated in the release that “Rather than rely on MCAT scores or GPA, San Diego Med’s shadow application process unlawfully judged applicants for admission based on their race. San Diego Med’s blatant efforts to prioritize race are illegal, and we will end these practices.”

The department said it is working with the college to bring the school into compliance.

“If those efforts fail, the Department will file suit,” The department said, according to Reuters.

UC San Diego told the outlet that it wants to follow federal regulations and ensure that its applicants “meet strict academic thresholds, a requirement that is and was applied uniformly to all applicants.”
