WASHINGTON - U.S. rail traffic continued modest overall gains for the week ending July 18, 2026, overcoming a slight decline in carload traffic.
According to the Association of American Railroads, traffic for the week was 523,900 carloads and intermodal units, a 3.4% gain over the same week in 2025. That included 226,883 carloads, down 1.2%, and 297,017 intermodal units, up 7.2%.
Through 28 weeks of 2026, cumulative U.S. rail volume is 14,176,139 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 3.4% over the same period last year. The volume of 6,344,225 carloads is up 2.9%, while the 7,831,914 intermodal units represent a 3.8% gain.
North American totals for the week, from nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, was 710,760 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.6% from the corresponding week in 2025. That included 328,259 carloads, up 0.6% from a year ago, and 382,501 intermodal units, up 6.3%.
For the year to date, North American volume is 19,503,621 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 2.9% over the first 28 weeks in 2025.
In Canada, volume for the week was 88,318 carloads, up 3.8%, and 71.076 intermodal units, down 3.2% from the corresponding week a year ago. The year-to-date volume of 4,599,829 carloads and intermodal units is a 0.6% increase over the same period last year.
For Mexican railroads, traffic included 13,058 carloads, up 12.2% from the same week last year, and 14,408 intermodal units, up 53%. The 28-week volume of 727,653 carloads and intermodal units represents a gain of 10.5% from the same point last year.
