Here is where you can see Big Boy No. 4014 in Kansas this week.

The world’s largest operating steam locomotive - Big Boy No. 4014 - will travel through Kansas this week as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

Big Boy No. 4014 was one of 25 “Big Boys” created exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad to haul heavy equipment. The Big Boys weigh 1.2 million pounds and are 133 feet long (for comparison, a Union Pacific diesel locomotive is 74 feet long).

While eight Big Boys are still remaining, only No. 4014 is in service.

Topeka

  • Stops at: Great Overland Station, 701 N. Kansas Ave.
  • Arrives: 12:15 p.m. July 23
  • Departs: 12:45 p.m. July 23

Salina

  • Stops at: Old Depot, 400 N. 13th St.
  • Arrives: 6 p.m. July 23
  • Departs: 9 a.m. July 24

Wilson

  • Stops at: Avenue E Crossing
  • Arrives: 11 a.m. July 24
  • Departs: 11:30 a.m. July 24

Hays

  • Stops at: E 9th and Milner St.
  • Arrives: 1:30 p.m. July 24
  • Departs: 9 a.m. July 26
  • Note: Public viewing is only available 9 a.m. to 5 pm. July 25

Grainfield

  • Stops at: Main St. Crossing
  • Arrives: 12 p.m. July 26
  • Departs: 12:30 p.m. July 26

If you visit Big Boy No. 4014, remember to stay at least 25 feet away from the railroad tracks.
