(NewsNation) — A United Airlines commercial flight from Houston to Phoenix was forced to land at a military base Monday due to severe weather.
The emergency landing happened at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona, a reroute from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The pilot told air traffic controllers there were 160 people on board, according to radio transmission. The controllers told the pilot different options for where to land, including the base.
When the flight was supposed to land, the Phoenix airport was under a ground stop due to thunderstorms.
“Due to severe weather in the Phoenix area on Monday night, the crew of United flight 2078 from Houston to Phoenix elected to land at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona as the safest course of action,” a United Airlines statement said. “The crew worked with air traffic controllers and the flight landed uneventfully.”
Passengers were bussed to the Phoenix airport.
“We’re grateful for the support from the Air Force and our teams at Phoenix Sky Harbor for finding a solution for our customers on this flight,” the statement said.
