The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said two people died in a crash Monday just after 7 p.m. on I-587 in Wilson County.
Troopers received tips of a Chevy Silverado pickup truck that made an abrupt U-turn on the interstate and began driving in the wrong direction before crashing head-on into a Subaru that was traveling westbound.
The State Highway Patrol confirmed that both drivers were killed in the crash.
A third vehicle crashed into the guard cables in the median while avoiding the crash. No one was injured in the third car.
The crash resulted in major traffic delays along the interstate, and all roads have since reopened.
