Defiance's unique world-building makes it one of the most complex and intricate sci-fi stories in recent memory, set decades after devastating wars between humans and factions of aliens have ravaged the Earth. Beyond that, however, Defiance excels because of its clever political storytelling.
Instead of typical shoot-outs that are common in the Western genre, Defiance explores webs of organized crime, shifting alliances, and fragile treaties, and it's this puzzle of political intrigue that keeps audiences gripped from start to finish. Despite following a variety of alien species and being set in the far future, Defiance explores deeply human stories and qualities, such as ingrained traditions, religious symbology, and family values.
While Defiance took the sci-fi Western world by storm on TV, the series also branched out into a companion video game that is continuing to expand the story even 11 years after Defiance's series finale in August 2015. Defiance truly is one of the most underrated sci-fi TV shows ever.
Defiance's Companion & Cast Prove How Great the Series Is
Despite premiering on Syfy in 2013, Defiance actually started life in 2008, when it was announced that a collaborative effort between Syfy and Trion Worlds would develop a video game that ran alongside a TV series. Both the TV series and the video game debuted in 2013, but the latter has continued even after the TV show's cancellation.
Because of the game, the world of Defiance has continued to expand and grow even 13 years later, becoming larger than fans of the show could have imagined. Staying separate from the TV show, the video game takes place 15 years after the transformative "Pale Wars," and is set in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Players are recruited by industrialist Karl Von Bach to search the area for advanced and expensive alien technology. While the video game alone divided audiences, the game and the TV show came together to create a comprehensive and thrilling adventure in this futuristic world. Grant Bowler and Stephanie Leonidas even reprised their roles as Joshua Nolan and Irisa in the Defiance video game, creating a sense of cohesion and connection that few other multimedia franchises have accomplished.
As well as Bowler and Leonidas, Defiance boasted some impressive stars, including the likes of Fionnula Flanagan, James Murray, Tony Curran, Julie Benz, Linda Hamilton, the late Graham Greene, and more. Defiance paved the way for some of the most impressive and exhilarating sci-fi series and video games that have followed, changing the landscape of the sci-fi Western genre forever.
The series might have been lost to time, being cancelled after only three seasons. However, the geopolitical narrative, defined and complex characters, and high-quality production value and visual effects make it one of the best space Westerns in recent memory, so it deserves renewed recognition.
