Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs won the Republican nomination Tuesday night for Arizona governor, defeating fellow GOP Rep. David Schweikert and two other candidates.
Biggs' victory comes after he secured President Donald Trump's endorsement earlier this month, making him the frontrunner in the race to face current Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in November. Hobbs is running for the Democratic Party's nomination unopposed.
The victor secured 70.4% of the vote while Schweikert secured 17.2% at the time of publishing, according to the Associated Press.
Biggs is expected to face a tough challenge in November because Republicans have struggled to win statewide in Arizona in the Trump era, save for the president himself.
Gubernatorial and Senate contests have seen Trump-backed candidates fall short in recent cycles, but Trump appears solidly behind Biggs, a strong conservative, who is a more moderately conventional candidate than some of his previous selections.
