Traffic stop leads to immigration detainers for 3 passengers in Ocean Ridge

A traffic stop over allegedly illegal window tint led to four arrests, including three passengers accused of being unlawfully in the United States, according to Ocean Ridge police reports.

An officer said a black GMC pickup was traveling north in the 6400 block of North Ocean Boulevard on Monday when the officer noticed what appeared to be excessively dark tint on the windshield and side windows.

The officer stopped the truck in the 6600 block and identified the driver as Leonidas Trujillo Julian, 36, of Deerfield Beach.

Police said Trujillo Julian presented a Mexican passport but did not have a valid driver’s license. A tint-meter test allegedly found the driver’s window allowed 3% visible light transmission, and the officer said the windshield also appeared to violate Florida law.

Trujillo Julian was issued citations for the tint violations and failing to provide proof of insurance. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and taken to the Palm Beach County Jail.

During the traffic stop, police said they found three passengers inside the truck:

• Ivan Trujillo DePaz, 26, of Mexico
• Juan Carlos Pavon Chavez, 32, of Honduras
• Ivan Antonio Urbina Garcia, 49, of Nicaragua

The arrest affidavit states that officers verified the three passengers were unlawfully in the United States. Police said immigration detainers were placed on all three before they were transported to the Palm Beach County Jail.

The report lists a misdemeanor allegation described as “illegal entry by unauthorized alien into this state.” It does not detail how officers verified the passengers’ immigration status or explain the circumstances of their alleged entry into the United States.

The allegations remain subject to review in court.
