When people pull into a grocery store parking lot or park in their own driveway, they probably are not thinking about the intense physical labor and heavy machinery required to build that surface.
A site in Delmar has been a long-term project for the crew from J. Hunziker Paving, an owner-operated company that has been serving the Capital Region for years. Operating from its main office in Rensselaer, the company handles projects ranging from residential driveways and backyard sports courts to municipal roadways and large commercial parking lots.

The company operates under the motto, “Big enough to serve you. Small enough to care.”
The work requires heavy lifting at every stage, from excavation and site grading to asphalt milling and line striping. The goal is to build a smooth, properly graded surface designed to withstand Capital Region winters without cracking, settling or heaving.
“You’re building a brand and then you’re just getting better and better employees, and with better employees it brings on better jobs, a better outcome, better finished product,” said Jason Hunziker of J. Hunziker Paving. “Each year we grow, we have more to offer to employees, future employees.”
Whether it involves grinding down an old parking lot so a new surface can begin on a solid foundation or patching potholes before they spread, the physical demands of the job are constant.
It is tough, hands-on work, but it keeps communities connected and moving.
