Top 2027 recruit Leena McField has committed to VCU, she told Rivals. The 5-9 guard from Greensboro (NC) Northwest Guilford chose the Rams over Davidson, Memphis, Tulane and Seton Hall.
“The people, the campus, where it is,” McField said of why she chose VCU. “It’s in a really good place for me and it’s only three hours away from home. It’s really convenient and I just fell in love with it when I was there, so I’m ready to make my decision.”
There were plenty of factors McField was considering when choosing a landing spot.
“The culture, a staff that believes in me – believes in what I can do as a player and a person,” she said. “Somewhere where I felt safe and felt that I could be there for the next five years.”
Although the offer just came in in May and there’s a new coaching staff in place, McField has already been able to build strong relationships.
“They were very direct that they wanted me,” she said. “Since then, our relationship has grown and it’s been really serious. I feel like they really wanted me and they really meant it. I feel like it was really genuine.”
With a new staff in place, McField talked to the staff about their style of play and how she could see herself fitting in.
“They want me to be an impact player as a freshman,” she said. “That’s what I wanted – to come in and be a very impactful player. Their style is very free and I like to play free – with a little bit of structure, but being able to get my shots and play within the system. I think we’re on the same page.”
McField marks the second 2027 commitment under new head coach Chelsea Banbury. The Rams also added 5-10 point guard Brigidanne Donohue.
