Today's NYT Strands answer — Today's theme and hints

The official theme for NYT Strands #871 is... "What is..."

And here's an unofficial hint from me: "Playing for a cash prize".

If you're still in the dark, here are some useful words to give you those valuable clue tokens:

  • BARGE
  • BRIE
  • WREN
  • PAGE
  • WRAP
  • GATE
  • DINER
  • ZITS
  • GEAR

Still struggling? The spangram touches two opposite sides of the board (but can start and end anywhere), and will give you a hint about the connection between the answers. Today, it starts with 'I' and ends with 'Y'.

Scroll down to find out what it is...

It's INJEOPARDY.

“"What is ..."”

🔵🔵🔵

Hi Strands fans. Confession time: as a Brit, I've never actually seen Jeopardy. But I'm familiar with it because of its huge cultural footprint (I remember the episode of Cheers where Cliff gets on it, for one thing!).

But really I didn't need any knowledge of the specific show, as all of the answers bar the spangram (and maybe 'wager') could fit any number of quiz shows.

It was easy to get started because of the 'Q' and double 'Z' near the top of the board. The former was connected to QUESTION, and the latter to BUZZER, which made it obvious what this was about.

When I saw the word "jeopardy", I extended to the spell INJEOPARDY to split the board in two, isolating ANSWER in the bottom-right corner at the same time.

Three answers remained to find on the opposite side. WAGER was at the bottom, with BOARD at the top. That just left CATEGORY in between the two to complete the puzzle.

“Write there”

Hi Strands fans. A nice and easy one today. The spelling of "write" rather than "right" meant this was always going to be about writing in some capacity.

When I found NOTEPAD in the bottom-left corner, it was clear that this was going to be listing different kinds of paper for scribbling on.

FILE was to its right, with CARD and SHEET completing the bottom segment.

I then found ENVELOPE in the top-left corner, which left a gap for the spangram of STATIONERY from the left-hand side to the right, and back to the middle.

That just left LETTERHEAD in the top-right corner to complete the puzzle.
