When Sporting Kansas City tallied the opening goal in Wednesday evening’s match against Minnesota United, it was just the fourth time this season Kansas City’s MLS club had scored first in a match.
That might explain why, now 16 matches into the season, Sporting entered the day dead-last in the Western Conference.
But Sporting reversed its fortunes and earned its fourth win of the season, a 2-1 victory over the visitors from up north. The club now sits at 4 wins, 10 losses, 2 draws (14 points), just six points off a playoff spot but with plenty of congestion in between.

Sporting KC took an early lead
As mentioned above, Wednesday was only the fourth time this season that Sporting KC has opened the scoring in an MLS match. Sporting struck first in a pair of wins over the Los Angeles Galaxy and did the same in a 3-1 loss to San Jose in April.
So Dejan Joveljic’s goal in the 28th minute to break a scoreless deadlock was certainly a welcome sign. His attempt was one of three SKC shots on target in the first half, one more than Minnesota despite the visitors holding 58% of the possession in that time.
Minnesota totaled only 0.34 xG in the first half, despite having one shot carom off the post.
Joveljic celebrated his goal by jumping into the stands at Sporting Park before being mobbed by teammates.
Manu Garcia gave Kansas City breathing room
Manu Garcia finished off an impressive spell of possession - that included at least six different Sporting players touching the ball - with his second goal of the season.
Jake Davis received the ball on the right before playing it back inside to Garcia, who slotted his shot home from just inside the edge of the box.
Garcia has now recorded a goal contribution in five straight contests. He has two goals and three assists in that time.
His goal proved especially important when Minnesota’s Devin Padelford was left unmarked on a set piece and scored on a header in the 75th minute.
A step in the right direction
Minnesota United is on the edge of the playoff picture, meaning Sporting didn’t exactly go toe to toe with an MLS powerhouse. But any win is a positive sign for an SKC squad struggling to build momentum in 2026.
Keep in mind, this Sporting team, over a stretch of eight matches in all competitions, was outscored 28-4, losing seven of those contests and drawing one. In the middle of that slate, the club was outscored 11-0 over three successive defeats.
That said, Sporting won two of its three matches leading into the World Cup break, and has won one match and lost another since the league returned to action. The recent trend is significantly more positive.
