Kevin Andrew was charged with first-degree murder after a shooting in Smithville left one man dead and Andrew's mother injured.

A 40-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday after a shooting in Smithville left one man dead and the suspect’s mother injured.

Kevin Casey Andrew, 40, faces first-degree murder, first-degree domestic assault and two counts of armed criminal action in a Smithville shooting Tuesday that left one man dead and Andrew’s mother injured, according to a Facebook post from the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officers responded to a home on Sunflower Street, in the northern part of Smithville, around 6 p.m. Tuesday on reports of shots fired at a nearby home.

There, the person who reported the incident told investigators they heard a loud noise coming from a neighbor’s home. The person also found damage from a bullet strike inside a bedroom.

Inside the home, officers found two people with gunshot wounds. A man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the prosecutor’s office. A woman, who the prosecutor’s office identified as Andrew’s mother, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Andrew is being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a $2 million bond, according to the Facebook post.

The prosecutor’s office said an investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Smithville Police Department at 816-532-0500 or email the department at [email protected].
