I'm convinced I recently time-traveled during a lunch trip while exploring the Pickaway County villages of Ashville and South Bloomfield. What I found: Cherry Street Diner, an adorable greasy spoon. The intrigue: You can still get all this food and a cup of coffee for under $10! Two eggs and toast ($4.50) and a pancake ($2.50). 💭 Alissa's thought bubble: Diner food is almost always reliable, but the vibes keep customers coming back. This place...

Zoom in: The model train circling the ceiling was decked out for the July Fourth Festival.

  • The staff was incredibly friendly, despite abundant sarcastic decor behind the counter.
  • The historic signs, wood-panel walls and questionable bathroom towel dispenser were straight out the '70s, despite the diner opening in 1992.

The bottom line: It was excellent.

Stop by: 6am-2pm Monday-Friday, 7am-1pm Saturday-Sunday. 29 Cherry St.

The lawmaker behind Ohio State University's state-mandated civics center wants to require undergraduates to take its courses after just 131 students enrolled last semester. Why it matters: Such centers have become a Republican priority in Ohio and other GOP-led states amid a push to overhaul public education and make it less "woke." A mandate would dramatically expand their reach despite relatively little student interest so far. Catch up quick:...

Endangered tiger Sarang arrives at the Columbus Zoo

One of the world's rarest big cat species is the newest Columbus Zoo resident as part of a global conservation effort. The big cat: Sarang, a 4-year-old female Amur (Siberian) tiger, arrived last week from Seoul Zoo in South Korea. Her journey took two years of coordination between the zoos through the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Global Species Management Plan for Amur tigers. Inside South Bloomfield, Ohio's fastest-growing community

The road leading to South Bloomfield's municipal building is a fitting metaphor: On one side, tractors harvest sprawling sod fields. On the other, modern homes line the horizon — and construction crews are still building more. Why it matters: This is the fastest-growing community in all of Ohio, luring Columbus workers with vacant land, good schools and safe, affordable housing. The spike is redefining a once-sleepy Pickaway County village...
