This NJ town named best biking spot in state and one of best in US

A great form of exercise and a way to travel without spending money on gas, biking is still a popular form of transportation in small towns and big cities.

Generations of people across the country and world use the two-wheel vehicle, whether to get to their destination or just travel around their community. PeopleForBikes, an organization that conducts studies on biking across the country, said about 112 million Americans rode a bike at least once in 2024. The same organization executes an analysis each year that ranks the best cities for biking in the country.

Bikers in North Jersey may be thrilled to see a Hudson County neighborhood included in the 2026 list of best biking cities in the country.

Hoboken received a score of 83 on a scale of one to 100. That rating puts the city as the highest ranked “medium city” for biking in the country. A score above 80 shows that city has safe and comfortable bike routes that serve people of all ages and abilities, according to the study.

Cities that score a 50 or higher are typically equipped with “connected, low-stress infrastructure — including slow neighborhood streets, off-street bike paths, and protected bike lanes." Specific research includes NACTO street and bikeway design standards and classifies a “low-stress bike network” from published work from Mineta Transportation Institute.

The research, what the organization calls their “Bicycle Network Analysis” included 3,019 U.S. cities. The study said 555 communities scored 50 or higher in 2026, an increase from 234 cities with that score the previous year.

Hoboken has a map on the city website that shows all the developed and future planned bike lanes. Bike racks are also shown on the map.

PeopleForBikes show the scores for numerous other New Jersey cities. The search tool allows users to find their exact city and see their biking score.
