Sometimes we hike for its sheer joy, to drink in the gorgeous scenery and the fresh air, connect with nature, and come face-to-face with wildlife. Other times, our hikes have a purpose or a destination, like visiting a hidden waterfall or making our way to a gorgeous Pennsylvania swimming hole. The Blue Hole in Forbes State Forest near Somerset is one such destination that those with a sense of adventure love finding. Although absolutely perfect in the summer, this scenic Pennsylvania trail is well worth following any time of the year, even just for a glimpse of the breathtaking blue hole that awaits. This is the kind of hidden gem Pennsylvania swimming hole that locals would rather keep to themselves.

With over 300 miles of multi-use trails, this playground is a wonderful place for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Other popular activities include fishing, backpacking, wildlife viewing, skiing, and more. The forest is brimming with natural wonders, and it’s the kind of destination that feels miles away from the world. And while there are many reasons to visit this underrated hidden gem in Pennsylvania, the Blue Hole tops the list for me.

Expect to spend at least 1.25 hours on the trail, and even more time if you plan to hang out at this swimming hole in Pennsylvania. Dogs are allowed on this scenic Somerset PA hiking trail, but make sure you keep your pooch on a leash. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an offline map handy for longer trails like this one. You never know when you will need it.
Very early in the trail, you'll come to another gorgeous natural wonder: Cole Run Falls. The photo-worthy cascade tumbles down 15 feet. If you don't have the energy for the entire trail, the trek to the waterfall is short and sweet. Hearing water flow in nature is always a relaxing experience, don’t you agree? If you keep going, you'll travel alongside Blue Hole Creek. Expect some challenges, including rocky terrain, steep climbs, and slippery spots. Some hikers recommend bringing trekking poles, while others say a sturdy pair of shoes will do just fine. Keep an eye out, too, for roots jutting out of the ground.
What to Know Before Visiting Blue Hole in Pennsylvania
Cole Run Trail is moderately challenging and not very well marked, so keep that in mind. If you're hiking in the summer, bring along your swimming gear, a pair of water shoes, and plenty of water. Be aware that the swimming hole can get quite crowded, not to mention that it’s deep and can be dangerous, so take care when swimming, especially if you bring kids along. For many, the highlight of this Pennsylvania hiking trail is the shimmering blue (yes, it really looks blue) swimming hole known as Blue Hole. You'll definitely want to spend some time taking it all in.
Summer is the most popular time to visit, and you probably won't find as much foot traffic in the winter, when it can get pretty icy. Fall is especially pretty when the leaves change colors, surrounded by the gorgeous natural wonders inside the forest.
The park is open 24 hours a day, and there is no entrance fee, so you can spend as much time as you’d like soaking up all the beauty. And when you’re done, be sure to carve out time to visit the nearby town of Somerset. Here, you’ll find antique shops, great restaurants, and covered bridges. It’s a wonderful destination for a day trip in Pennsylvania, especially during the fall.
Before you plan your trip, I suggest visiting the Forbes State Forest website for more information. You can find details about camping, backpacking, hunting, scenic drives, and more.
Please take extra caution when swimming in the creek. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has investigated lead contamination here and advises not to drink the water.
