This is part of Outsports’ series of “Dear Giants” letters written by San Francisco Giants fans and sent to the team after their mishandling of this season’s Pride Night, with Bible verses written on Pride caps by three players intending to send an anti-gay message during Pride Night.
San Francisco Giants team management has made it clear they are not interested in apologizing for their utter mishandling of a Pride Night fiasco that has pushed away the very LGBTQ fans and community supporters the night is designed to welcome.
This longtime Giants fan — M — sent the team a sample apology letter he’d like to see the team send to fans. He addressed his outreach specifically to Roscoe Mapps, the gay Chief Diversity Officer for the San Francisco Giants.

Dear Giants,
Get off the sidelines and into the game
Our weekly playbook is packed with everything from locker room chatter to pressing LGBTQ sports issues.
Long time fan. 67 years old. Grew up in NY. Dad went to Polo Grounds, saw Willie Mays in his prime. Moved here in 1980 and ecstatic about being able to see my Giants live and local.
Now, utterly depressed by your non-actions/actions over the Pride Night debacle. Not just the Gay community but the entire Giant community is still waiting for a legitimate, empathetic apology. How about this:
Dear cherished Giants Community,
In the aftermath of our annual Pride Night celebration and the use of biblical phrases by some of our players to show their dissaproval of the Bay Area Gay Community, we are deeply sorry that this took place.
Please know that these players were not authorized to engage in this behavior (no public displays of any sort are allowed) and the entire Giant Organization is truly sorry for the hurt we have caused.
There is no getting around the fact that such acts by these players have caused grave harm to not just to our own reputation but more importantly, to you. While any player is free to not participate in events such as Pride Night, they are not free to actively disparage any segment of our commmunity, especially one so important as the Bay Area gay community.
We know, as guardians of the Giants legacy, we now have some bridges that need repair. We will be meeting with members of the community to personally express our apologies and to listen to whatever needs to be said.
The Giants ask for your forgiveness and faith that not only will future actions like these not be tolerated but we will recommit to furthering our commitment to promoting diversity, respect and inclusion in regard to all members of our valued community.
