Erik Arreaga has been going to Comic-Con for most of his life, starting in 1991 as a fan. He later became a vendor and exhibitor and now is a professional artist.
But in recent years, the 47-year-old Chula Vista resident has become well known as one of the top chroniclers of the pop culture gathering, offering tips on social media to all sorts of information about the sprawling event.
And as the convention gets ready to kick off Wednesday, Arreaga, who on his artist Instagram account describes himself as a “San Diego Comic-Con Enthusiast,” is feeling the vibe. He thinks this year’s convention is going to create a lot of excitement.
“This year it’s going to be back because Marvel and DC have shown they’re really coming back in full force and giving people what they want,” Arreaga said. “I’m excited for the attendees.”
One of San Diego’s signature events, Comic-Con is expected to draw over 135,000 fans, in addition to a global media corps, celebrities, vendors and San Diegans looking to check out the many attractions outside the San Diego Convention Center.
“I think it will be another great show,” said David Glanzer, chief communications and strategy officer of the group that organizes the event. “While we have an awesome exhibit floor, incredible programming and amazing guests, the magic that makes it all work are the attendees.
“A community the size of a small city gathers each year and, well, it’s a great thing to experience and a great thing of which to be a part.”
In recent years, Comic-Con has been hamstrung by COVID, a Hollywood writers’ strike and a pullout of the event by major studios.
But this year, with Marvel scheduled to occupy the convention center’s main Hall H room, and with other movies, television shows and pop culture companies participating, the convention is poised to produce headline-grabbing moments.
And Arreaga will be there through it all, guiding those not able to make it, and the tens of thousands who are there in person.
He’s been attending the event since 1991 and he would get questions about it from friends and others. So, in 2014, he decided to start answering those questions and provide information through a Facebook group that has nearly 42,000 members.
“I try to use it for how to manage around San Diego and how to enjoy the city,” he said, of the group. “…I want you to enjoy the city and I don’t want you to feel overwhelmed. I want you to feel comfortable in San Diego.”
At the Con, Arreaga prefers to greet people at his artist table, where this year he is promoting his Latina anti-hero title, “La Chingona.”
Although he may not leave his table much, Arreaga still feels the energy of Comic-Con.
“It’s really exciting,” he said. “I love it. I call San Diego Comic Con my New Year’s Eve. Once it’s done, my new year resets. It’s just a great party for everything I’ve done this year.”
