It’s a piece of cake to make.

It’s a piece of cake to make.

The most saved dessert this past month isn’t exactly seasonal. You could truly make it whenever. You will have to turn the oven on for this one, but according to our readers, it’s worth it. And what the recipe requires in oven time, it more than makes up for in actual hands-on cooking time, which is only 10 minutes. So what is the dessert recipe all of our readers seem to be saving this past month? Our Blueberry Dump Cake.

The Most Saved Dessert Recipe In June

If ‘dump’ in the title of this popular recipe doesn’t sit well with you, let us explain. It’s a term for a cake that’s so easy, you essentially just dump the ingredients into the pan and bake. In fact, we’re starting to sense a theme, since last month readers saved our Strawberry Dump Cake the most. Dump cakes might be some of our most popular recipes to date.

It bakes up like a cobbler, with a golden crust and jammy fruit beneath. But unlike a homemade cobbler, it relies on a cake mix for the crust and canned pie filling for the fruit. In this case blueberry, but you can easily swap it for your favorite, whether cherry or strawberry. Other than a few flavor additions (lemon juice to brighten the filling and cinnamon to warm up the crust), we’ve kept the recipe streamlined and classic. Those going for extra credit can also make the filling from scratch.

There is an art to a dump cake, however. You need to layer the butter correctly (don’t worry we show you how in the recipe), to ensure there are no pesky pockets of dry cake mix. And you don’t want to stir it! The way the ingredients are layered into the pan is key to it baking up properly.

Test Kitchen Tips

This recipe is fairly foolproof, but like all of our recipes, we put them through review in our Test Kitchen. Here are a few pointers the experts called out:

  • Missing fresh fruit flavor? Dot fresh blueberries over the dump cake before baking for pops of fresh berries throughout.
  • Yellow cake mix isn’t the only option. Our Test Kitchen says spice, white, or even coconut- flavored mixes will all work perfectly.
  • For added flavor, use lemon zest in addition to the juice in the filling, or swap the cinnamon for a spice mix that offers more variety, like pumpkin pie spice
